Having just overcome some technical problems with the website, which nearly meant having to write everything again from notes (approx. 50,000 words), I thought now would be a good time to record what I’ve achieved so far with www.theshireway.com; and to give thanks for my lucky escape from a very dark timeline indeed.
In the last few months, I’ve written descriptions of a dozen legs of The Shire Way, completing the route as far as Evesham. I hope to finish the directions for the return journey to Birmingham by midsummer of this year. Accompanying the text for each leg is a downloadable .gpx map, which can be used with a variety of navigational apps on one’s phone.
I’ve also set up two social media accounts on X and Youtube. At time of writing I (notionally) have 168 followers on the former, with people liking or reposting my tweets 183 times since the end of August. It’s a start. I’ve created seven videos on Youtube, consisting of first-person footage of the route which I filmed over three days in September. I intend to establish further accounts on Facebook and Instagram in the coming days.
From tomorrow, I’ll be working with Broadway Academy, Perry Barr, to develop The Shire Way as an educational tool for secondary school pupils.
